The Leonore overtures, to varying degrees of intensity and complexity, all reflect themes from the opera. The Fidelio overture, on the other hand, stands alone, much shorter than its predecessors and indicative of the celebratory mood in Vienna in 1813, after Napoleon's retreat from Vienna. The Fidelio Overtures Beethoven's only opera, "Fidelio," was first produced in Vienna, November 20, 1805, under the title of "Leonora," with the overture now known as "Leonora No. 2." Subsequently the opera was shortened and produced with a new overture, the "Leonora No. 3." Today, we infrequently hear his only opera, Fidelio, and virtually never the music for the ballet Creatures of Prometheus or the stage plays King Stephen, Egmont, or The Ruins of Athens. The overtures, however, have become staples of the orchestral repertoire and examples of some of Beethoven… During the early Romantic era, composers such as Beethoven and Mendelssohn composed overtures which were independent, self-existing instrumental, programmatic works that presaged genres such as the symphonic poem.
This unusual state of affairs can be attributed to the extremely long and convoluted evolution of the opera, which actually began life as Leonore, the first version of which was staged in 1805, when Napoleon's troops were overrunning Vienna.
